Neato Botvac D7 Robot Vacuum Review

Robot vacuum cleaners seemed like an eye-catching novelty a few years back. Fast-forward to present-day and Neato manufacturers have turned robot vacuums into a viable home cleaning solution. Advancements in technology brought the development of smarter and more effective robot vacuums with improved features. The Botvac D7 is a prime example of such vacuum cleaners.

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum is an avant-garde cleaning solution that allows you to carry out one of the most disliked household chores while hardly having to lift a finger. This futuristic robot vacuum helps rid your house of dust, allergens, pet hairs, crumbs and other messes. This D7 robot vacuum takes on Naeto’s definitive D-shaped body and sports a smooth matte finishing.

This very compact robot vacuum measures 13.21 inches by 12.56 inches by 3.92 inches and weighs in at 7.5 lbs. The extra height on the D7 is due to the turret that encloses the vacuum’s sensors.

Since the Botvac D7 robot vacuum already had an app, the manufacturers did away with the small LCD panel sported on older models.  In the place of the LCD panel, Neato placed a single button on the lower left side of the robot vacuum. Tapping the button ones initiates the default cleaning mode while tapping the button twice launches the spot cleaning mode.

When bought, the Botvac D7 packaging comes complete with a charging dock, filter, cleaning tools, and spare brushes. A magnetic strip measuring two meters is also included for making physical boundary markers. Virtual No-Go boundary lines can be set on the vacuum’s app, so you might not even use the magnetic strip.

Neato App

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum was designed to work with an Android and iOS Smartphone application. The D7 vacuum sports and upgraded app with improved intuitive design, usability and responsiveness. Once you have linked the Neato app with your robot vacuum, the app will automatically take you through tutorial videos and instructions on how to use it.

The Neato app will need first to complete a precise cleaning run and map out its surroundings. After mapping out the floor plan, this app lets you create virtual No-Go zones for the robot vacuum.  The Neato app provides you with options for starting or stopping a cleaning cycle and docking the robot vacuum. This Smartphone app gives you the ability to create & personalize scheduled cleanings, switch between cleaning modes, and view all the saved floor plans.

This D7 robot vacuum app saves data of up to 20 cleaning cycles. The collected data is displayed to show how long the D7 vacuum took to finish one cycle and how much space was covered.  The Neato app also lets you view the battery life, see all the cleaning statistics and cleaning history. The Neato’s Smartphone app also allows you to locate the vacuum anywhere it may be and even control it from virtually anywhere.

D-shape design

The Botvac D7 robot vacuum is designed with a simple design and form factor. This D7 robot vacuum has been modelled with the distinct D-shape and not for aesthetic purposes alone. The D7 vacuum cleaner is shaped that way to quickly and effectively clean dirt & debris along walls, cabinets, and in corners.

On the lower left side of the D-shaped D7 robot vacuum sits one black button and four LED lights. The understated single button gives you control to power the vacuum cleaner, restarting it, and swapping the cleaning modes. The four lights indicate battery life, Wi-Fi connectivity, and the current cleaning mode.

Laser Smart mapping and sensors

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum uses state-of-the-art LaserSmart mapping technology to carefully map out and navigate your home while creating a floor layout for the vacuum cleaner to follow. The sensors and mapping technologies are time and power saving as well as very effecient.

The Botvac D7 robot vacuum uses the smart mapping and sensors to guide it through a logical cleaning process of cleaning in straight lines instead of in random motions. Cleaning in consistent straight lines ensures the robot vacuum cleans a more significant area in less time having used little power. The sensors and Laser Smart mapping enable theD7 robot vacuum cleaner to complete cleaning cycles even in pitch black conditions.

The Laser Smart mapping and Sensors also allow you to create virtual No-Go boundary lines. These virtual boundary lines ensure the D7 vacuum cleaner does not go into restricted rooms or areas of the house. The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum cleaner comes with a magnetic tape roll which can be used in case the virtual boundaries don’t work.

Spiral combo brush and high-performance filter

Underneath the D7 robot vacuum sits a rotating combo brush bar which is 70% larger than other competitor vacuum’s. The rotating brush is strategically positioned at the flat back-end and widens across the chassis enabling the vacuum cleaner to perform quicker and more effectively even around corners. The D7 robot vacuum’s rotating brush is equipped with both a rubber blade and stiff bristles making it suitable for all floor types and pet hairs.

A smaller spiral sweeping brush sits right next to the core brush and rotates at 90 degrees to the core brush. The rotating spiral brush was modelled to agitate the dirt and push it into the vacuums pathway for edge cleaning.

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum sports an ultra-performance filter constructed with HEPA material. The HEPA material helps to effectively and efficiently capture the smallest of particles, trapping up to 99% of dust mites in the house.

Cleaning and suction modes

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum cleaner features three distinct cleaning modes including; manual cleaning, spot cleaning, and house cleaning. The default mode in this D7 robot vacuum is the house cleaning mode. The house cleaning mode cleans up the entire space it has access to.

The manual cleaning mode gives you the ability to control the D7 vacuum like a remote control toy car using navigation displayed on the Neato app. The spot cleaning mode lets the D7 robot vacuum clean up a small specific spot in the room.

The two suction modes that come with the Botvac D7 vacuum are the Eco mode and Turbo mode. The Eco mode makes less noise when cleaning than turbo mode, but it takes a lot of time. The Turbo mode, on the other hand, cleans faster but makes plenty of noise and uses a lot of power.

Apart from the above main features, the Botvac D7 robot vacuum cleaner comes with other features which are just as impressive. One such feature is the vacuum’s compatibility with voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa. This compatibility feature means you can give out specific commands to the D7 using nothing but your voice.

The high-capacity lithium-ion battery provides the vacuum with up to 120 minutes of runtime. The auto-dock and resume is also a useful feature in the D7 vacuum cleaner. The auto-dock and resume feature allow the D7 to automatically dock itself when it is low on power and automatically continue cleaning from where it left off.

  • Effectively cleans all floor types
  • Advanced Laser Smart mapping technology
  • Can save up to 3-floor plans
  • Features smart battery charging
  • User-friendly and responsive app

  • Expensive
  • Makes more noise than most Botvacs
  • Connectivity issues from time to time
  • Cleaning and maintaining the brush is gross

Bottom Line

The Neato Botvac D7 robot vacuum cleaner is super useful and efficient, making it worth every penny spent on it.  Regular updates of the Neato app enable you to have a more hands-on or hands-off experience depending on your preference. This D7 robot vacuum guarantees satisfaction. You can read about more robot vacuum reviews from our staff here.
