Start with the controller in your hand, not the console it connects to. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers can work across overlapping systems, but their replacement plastics are not universally interchangeable. Likewise, new face-button plastics may not resolve an issue with the contact membrane or circuit board. Custom button sets can change the finish, symbols or overall appearance without adding functionality. Internal switch work can involve soldering; opening a controller also risks damaging clips or cables. Disconnect power and remove removable batteries before disassembly, and consider a repair service if the required work exceeds your tools or experience.

Compare like-for-like parts rather than relying on the lead photo. One listing may contain only an LB/RB assembly, while another includes ABXY keys, triggers, a D-pad, thumbstick caps and shell panels. Check whether tools, membranes, springs and screws are actually included. A kit pictured beside a complete controller does not necessarily include that controller, and a full-shell kit can still require you to reuse internal components.

Use the generation groups to narrow the listings, then compare exact model compatibility, quantity and finish. Multi-model titles may appear in one group even when the seller claims broader compatibility. New aftermarket parts can differ in lettering, texture and fit from original parts, so inspect close-up images and the description rather than assuming a factory-identical result.

Compare the delivered cost, including any shipping charges shown at checkout. Check the listing's return terms before opening packaging or starting installation, especially when compatibility is uncertain. For several simultaneous faults, weigh the required parts, tools and repair effort against replacing the controller. A low-priced button cap is only useful when it addresses the actual fault.
