The Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter connects compatible Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Elite wireless controllers to a Windows PC using Xbox Wireless, rather than ordinary Bluetooth. It is particularly useful for an older Xbox One controller without Bluetooth, or for a PC setup where controller-connected audio matters. It is not a Wi-Fi adapter and does not add wireless internet to a console.

Check the controller family before comparing offers. Xbox 360 wireless controllers need a dedicated Xbox 360 controller receiver; neither generation of the Xbox Wireless Adapter replaces that receiver. A wired Xbox 360 controller connects directly by USB and does not need this product. Keyboard-and-mouse converters, Kinect adapters and headset-only transmitters also serve different purposes.

For Bluetooth-capable controllers, built-in PC Bluetooth may already meet your needs. Xbox Wireless supports features that Bluetooth does not, including supported controller-connected headsets. However, avoid assuming any adapter will eliminate lag or disconnects: USB placement, interference, controller firmware and drivers can all affect the connection. Third-party multi-platform Bluetooth adapters are not interchangeable with Microsoft's Xbox Wireless receiver.

Microsoft's original receiver is commonly identified as Model 1713, while the smaller later adapter is Model 1790. Both belong to the Xbox Wireless receiver family, but the compact model takes up less space around a PC's USB ports. Ask for a readable model-label photo when a listing only says second generation or OEM. Listings without a clear model identifier remain under Other rather than being assigned a generation from appearance alone.

Microsoft-branded, OEM and official are listing claims, not independent authentication. Compare the stated manufacturer with the label photographs and description. Wording such as for Microsoft or compatible with Xbox usually signals a third-party product, which this guide leaves out; its specifications can differ from Microsoft's adapter.

New stock can arrive in retail packaging, a bulk box or no retail box. Bulk packaging does not automatically mean used, but check that the condition description is consistent and that the listing includes the receiver itself. An extension cable may be useful for placement, yet should not be assumed included. Compare the delivered cost, return terms and any stated warranty coverage on the actual offer before buying.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 are the practical compatibility targets for this purchase. Listings sometimes advertise Windows 7 or 8.1, but older-system support varies by receiver generation and driver availability. Do not treat a long list of operating systems in a generic title as proof that the exact adapter will work on your machine. Check the manufacturer's documentation, especially for third-party receivers or an older PC.

The Microsoft adapter uses a USB-A connection and can plug into a suitable USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port. If your computer only has USB-C, account for an appropriate USB adapter or hub. Leave enough room for nearby connectors, and consider a USB extension cable to move the receiver away from a metal PC case or sources of interference.

For pairing, connect the receiver and allow Windows to install its driver. Press the adapter's pairing button until its light flashes, then turn on the controller and hold its Pair button until the controller light flashes. Steady lights indicate a connection. If Windows shows Xbox ACC or a driver error instead, check Windows Update, including optional driver updates where available, and use Microsoft support resources rather than unofficial driver-download sites.
